While it may not the first thing on your mind when making a purchase decision, choosing a steel workshop or garage over a traditional wooden structure can help you avoid those terrifying creepy crawlies and even make your building last longer.
When it comes to your workshop or garage, keeping it clean is a matter of personal preference. While it may be easier to work and find your tools and materials in a clean, well-organized shop, some people work well in and even enjoy a chaotic mess. Regardless of useless junk or organization, nobody wants to walk into their workshop or garage and find it filled with bugs or spiders. Aside from being a possible danger to your health and just plain creepy, many bugs and other pests that occupy old wooden garages can actually eat away at the wood, compromising the structure and making it less and less stable. Termites aren’t the only thing you have to worry about. There are several different kinds of insects which can cause serious damage to your wooden garage or workshop.
The Unusual Suspects
- Carpenter Ants – these common bugs tend to reside in cooler climates relative to termites. They prefer dead, damp wood and carve out nests using their mandibles. Unlike termites, these insects do not consume the wood, they just carve hollow structures into wood or sections of trees to act as a home. These commonly infest wood buildings and homes and can cause millions of dollars in structural damage. There are over 1,000 species of this ant and some can grow to an inch long.
- Powderpost Beetles – these pests make up a group of 70 species of woodboring beetles. They attack deciduous trees and reduce the wood to a fine powdery dust, creating the beetle’s namesake. The larvae of these insects can unknowingly live in and feed off of wood for years before they emerge as adults, making it difficult to notice and prevent damage.
- Carpenter Bees – the common name of this bug derives from its nesting behavior. Almost every species of this genus burrow into hard plant material such as dead wood or bamboo. With more than 500 species, these insects play a hugely important role in our ecosystem by pollinating plants, trees, and crops. However, their nesting can cause property damage and they can quickly become a pain for homeowners.
