Unfortunately a garage fire led to a house being severely damaged recently in Brockton, Massachusetts. Reporters wrote grim phrases describing the tragedy, as “black smoke billowed into the air.” The fire was severe and has affected the family greatly. The local fire department received the call early in the morning from neighbors and people driving through the area. The fire could be seen from a long ways away. The deputy chief of the fire department said “When I turned onto Warren Avenue, I saw a heavy column of smoke in the distance. When the first truck arrived, they had heavy fire in a single attached garage that was extended into the house.”
The garage was built onto the house, so it was comprised of wood, dry-wall, etc. The same materials that the house it was connected to was made of. The garage completely became engulfed by the fire, and the firefighters had to fight the fire intensely. Several hoses from multiple trucks sprayed the flames, and some firefighters were given the dangerous task of hacking away the roof of the garage to cut off paths for the fire to grow towards. They fought the fire for a total of 30 minutes, and the car inside was still burning strong. Deputy Fire Chief said “We knocked the heavy fire down within probably 10 minutes. They then had to open up the wall and ceiling and get up into the attic because the fire was traveling across.” Part of the reason that the fire was so strong had been speculated on by the deputy chief. He claims that the “magnesium engine block” of the car is highly flammable and burns intensely. The firefighters had to approach the engine block differently than the rest of the fires, as dry chemicals are required to extinguish magnesium flames. Initially they thought the car was the source of the fire due to the engine block being so volatile.
After investigations continued and witnesses, neighbors, were interviewed as to what they saw initially a different theory has been brought forward. First the car, but now several residents saying they heard explosions have steered the investigation in a different direction. Apparently the car had also not been used for over a month. The investigation is still going on, and hopefully the firefighters and local investigators can get to the bottom of this unfortunate occurrence. On the bright side, the two people inside safely got outside of the home before the fire made it’s way from the garage. The house was valued at over $200,000 and was nearly 70 years old.
