Chances are, you decided to invest in a steel building so that you could get the most building for your money and keep all of your property protected. Whether you’re keeping your vehicles safe from the elements or locking up all of your expensive tools and equipment, a steel building is almost an extra layer of insurance for all of your toys.
However, if you’re trying to protect your investments, shouldn’t you also protect your new building? While our buildings are manufactured to be incredibly strong and last for generations, that doesn’t mean they are safe from falling trees or devastating hurricanes or tornadoes. Insuring your steel building now could save you – and your wallet – from suffering down the road.
How is Insurance Priced?
According to the Metal Building Manufacturers Association, the type of construction and materials used have a huge influence on the insurance rates for buildings. The Insurance Services Office (ISO) is the organization that compiles data used in developing insurance rates. For rating purposes, ISO categorizes buildings into the following six classes: frame, jointed masonry, noncombustible, masonry noncombustible, modified fire-resistive, and fire-resistive. For more information on each class and how they are organized, view the MBMA’s bulletin on metal building insurance costs.
Metal buildings usually fall into the noncombustible category, described as “… buildings with exterior walls, floors, and roof of noncombustible or slow-burning materials supported by noncombustible or slow-burning supports.” According to the same bulletin, “… the cost to insure a metal building is significantly lower than frame and jointed masonry buildings.” Combined with low maintenance costs, speed of construction, and ease of future building changes, purchasing a steel building can be incredibly cost-effective.
