With sunny blue skies prevailing, we understand that now might not be the perfect time to discuss wintry conditions, but spring is the ideal season to plan building projects to better safeguard against intrepid Mother Nature.
Twenty-six years ago, this March, the 1993 Storm of the Century paralyzed the Deep South with a cyclonic snowstorm that blanketed the eastern seaboard from the Florida panhandle to the frozen tundra of Maine. This titan storm formed ominously in the Gulf of Mexico, which has been the birthplace of countless winter storms, before meandering and terrorizing the south and finally dissipating. When the storm finally relinquished its icy grip, an estimated 40 percent of the nation’s population had experienced the effects of the 1993 Superstorm.
This “storm of the century” was as bizarre as it was intense, as the cyclone produced extreme weather events, including tornados and hurricane forced winds and precipitation to complement this one-two punch behemoth. Affected regions saw as much as six feet of snow in the south with snowdrifts approaching the 40-foot mark. The storm claimed more than 300 deaths and cost an excess of $2 billion.
With such a heavy and wet snow blanketing the region, roof collapses of factories and buildings were widespread. It goes without saying, that structural failings of carports, garages and metal buildings were reported across the nation. Since the storm’s destructive march to Canada, engineering and building styles have come a long way although no shelter is impervious to fury of Mother Nature although at Steel Building Garages, we feel like we’ve come pretty close.
